Decision Quality | SPG Research Group
How does your judgment actually work?
Judgment is not a fixed trait. It is a set of specific, measurable constructs: calibration, disconfirmation, temporal reasoning, decoupling, information triage and resolve. Most leaders over-index on some and under-index on others in ways they cannot see without a structured instrument.
The Judgment Diagnostic is a behavioral self-report instrument grounded in decision-science constructs. They are directional indicators of self-reported behavioral tendency, not validated psychometric measurements, clinical assessments or classifications. Use results as development inputs, not selection criteria.
The problem this solves
Self-ratings of "good judgment" tell you how you see yourself. Scenarios with no obvious right answer show how you actually trade off evidence, time horizons, ego and uncertainty. The result is a profile of where your decision-making tends to be sharp and where error is most likely to cluster.
What a self-rating asks
"How good is your judgment?" Everyone answers above average, so the answer carries little information.
What the Diagnostic does
It puts you inside decisions and reads the pattern in your choices across six dimensions, so the result reflects behavior rather than self-image.
The six dimensions
Each dimension is scored on a continuous scale, not a binary high or low.
1
Knowing what you do not know.
Whether your confidence matches your accuracy: neither overclaiming certainty nor underselling real knowledge.
2
Updating against your own priors.
The active habit of seeking evidence that your current belief is wrong, and revising when it is.
3
Short, medium and long horizons at once.
Tracing the consequence of the consequence, not just this quarter.
4
Separating ego and emotion from the call.
Judging a decision on its merits, and changing your mind without experiencing it as defeat.
5
Signal versus noise under overload.
Identifying which information is decision-relevant when there is too much of it.
6
Deciding and owning it under uncertainty.
Committing to a call without perfect information, and standing behind it.
What you receive
The scan places you at one of four judgment profile levels and flags the dimensions most likely to cause error.
Sharp
Judgment is consistently well calibrated across the dimensions.
Functional
Generally sound, with some dimensions to strengthen.
Significant Gaps
Specific dimensions where systematic error is likely to form.
Critical
Several dimensions where judgment is likely to fail under pressure.
How it is used
See your own judgment profile before a high-stakes decision, a new role or a board seat, and choose which dimension to build first.
See how a group's judgment profiles combine: where the team shares a blind spot and where members cover for each other.
Free versus full
The scan gives a direction. The full diagnostic gives a precise, scenario-grounded profile.

Design principles
Scenarios, not self-ratings
No obvious right answer, so the pattern in your choices carries the information.
Constructs, not a personality type
Each dimension describes a skill you can build, not a fixed trait.
